Awhile is an adverb used after a verb. It means `for a short period of time'.

I may have to stay there awhile.

A while is an indefinite period of time. You can say that someone does something for a while or after a while.

For a while it looked as if it might work.

Henze settled on Ischia for a while.

After a while, we drove off.

You can use adjectives such as `short', `little', or `long' in front of while.

I'm going to have to leave you on your own for a short while.
